A few people have been asking how this slaughter can be humane – and even though it’s a bit heavy, it’s also kinda fascinating…
First up, the cattle are processed on-farm. This eliminates stressful, long-haul travel and also the fear associated with a new, frightening environment.
They pretty much walk up a ramp, right next to their cattle yards and are rendered unconscious just seconds after leaving the herd.
The mobile unit was designed heavily influenced by Temple Grandin’s research, and if you haven’t heard of her – that’s a delicious, deep rabbit hole just waiting to be explored but I’ll do my best to explain it here…
Dr Grandin is one of the world’s most accomplished autistic people and her autism has given her the ability to understand how animals see the world. She’s the leading expert on humane animal handling and slaughter systems.
In the Provenir unit, where the cattle are knocked – the system has been meticulously designed to remove any fear reducing visual distractions. It also features a huge window, so the animals instinctively head towards that – rather than getting forced into a noisy, scary, dark place.
As they pass through, they’re quickly and painlessly stunned with a captive bolt to the head. After this, death happens in an unconscious state as the cattle are bled out.
